for search engine optimization, or SEO. Their purpose isn’t necessarily to help readers.
Their purpose is to rank in search results. To attract clicks. To generate advertising revenue.
Which raises a strange possibility. If a massive percentage of written content online is created
primarily to satisfy algorithms rather than humans, who is the internet really for? People
or machines? Then of course, there’s the phenomenon of bot traffic. Automated accounts
have existed on the internet for decades. At first, many were simple spam programs. They
flooded forums with advertisements, posted suspicious links, or attempted to scam users.
But modern bots are far more sophisticated. Some mimic human conversation patterns.
Others, automatically repost trending content. Some are designed to amplify certain messages
or promote specific products. Researchers studying social media platforms have repeatedly found
engagement of large networks of automated accounts.
Sometimes, they’re used for marketing
campaigns. Sometimes, for spreading misinformation. Sometimes, simply to inflate follower counts

look very helpful, but read closely and something feels a little off. The writing is repetitive,
the information is incredibly vague, and the same ideas seem to appear across dozens of different
websites. That’s because many of these articles aren’t written to inform readers.
They’re written
to satisfy search algorithms. For years, companies hired writers to produce enormous volumes of pieces
like this. Freelancers were sometimes paid just a few dollars per article. Speed mattered way more
than quality. The goal was simple. Publish thousands of pages filled with keywords people
were likely to search for, then surround those pages with advertisements.
If enough people
clicked on the articles, the site generated profit. But in recent years, another development
has accelerated this process dramatically. Artificial intelligence. You know, AI. Modern
language models can produce large volumes of text almost instantly. Entire articles,
product descriptions, news summaries, blog posts. And because these systems can generate content
far faster than human writers can, some websites now publish thousands, sometimes tens of thousands
of pages automatically. Which leads to an unusual situation. Machines writing content that other
machines, search engine crawlers, then evaluate in rank.
Also that humans might eventually click
on the result. The internet becomes a kind of automated conversation between algorithms.
Humans are still present, but they’re no longer the only participants. And that scale of this

At times, these automated systems generate more traffic than actual users. Which means that in a very literal sense, much of the internet really is machines
interacting with other machines. Not because of any type of secret plan, but just because the
automation is simply efficient. If a company can deploy a program to monitor millions of websites
in seconds, why rely on human labor at all? Social media adds another layer to this whole system.
Modern platforms rely heavily on algorithms to decide on which users to see. These recommendation

they like, which topics generate emotional reactions. And then the system learns to deliver
more of that kind of content. In theory, the goal is to keep users engaged. But in practice,

they aren’t individuals. They’re marketing constructs. Teams of designers and writers
control the accounts. Every single post is deliberate. Every single comment is carefully
curated. The goal is to create the illusion of authenticity. And in many cases, it works.
Millions of followers interact with these digital personalities without realizing that they aren’t
even real people, which raises a fascinating philosophical question. If a fictional character
posts something online and millions of real humans respond to it, is that interaction any
less real? Or is it simply another layer of modern media? But perhaps the most unsettling

but because the signal’s buried beneath enormous volumes of content. Some of it’s created by humans,
some of it’s amplified by algorithms, some of it is generated automatically. And often,
the differences are completely invisible. Which brings us back to that eerie feeling
many internet users describe, scrolling through feeds that never seem to end.
Endless posts, endless comments, endless reactions. Yet something about it feels strangely hollow,
as if the conversation never quite settles into real dialogue at all. As if the participants
might not all be real. Now it’s important to take a step back here, because the dead internet theory
taken literally makes a very dramatic claim. That most online content is artificial.
That the web is dominated by bots. That genuine human conversation has become a rarity.
And there’s little evidence to support that extreme version. Humans still produce enormous
amounts of content online. Videos, podcasts, forums, communities, entire ecosystems of creativity,
and discussion still exist. But the environment surrounding that human activity and engagement

communities today resemble the early internet still. Small, focused, deeply human, podcasts,

research, and creative work. These spaces might not dominate trending feeds, but they thrive quietly
beneath the surface of the larger web. It’s proof that human connection online hasn’t vanished.
It’s simply moved to different corners. And perhaps that’s the real lesson behind the
dead internet theory. Not a warning that the internet is gone, but a reminder the internet
we see is not the entire internet. The visible web is curated, filtered, optimized, designed
to capture attention. But beyond that layer, countless real conversations continue every day.
People continue sharing ideas. People continue building communities. People continue creating
art. People continue telling stories. It’s still very much alive. Which means the internet isn’t dead.
